HCA Member Show 2021-2022

90 work of art were submitted to enter the show this year from 18 towns and 2 states. The artwork submitted this year was excellent, and narrowing it down was extremely difficult. However, the works selected will make a powerful portrayal of our community of artists.  Juror Sarah Alexander selected 56 for display in the gallery. She is a Core Artist Member at Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.  Her work is in private collections and has been shown extensively throughout New England, as well as abroad. Sarah's work has been published by North Light Books, and she was recently a featured artist in the NARM Quarterly magazine.

What inspired you to make this work?: Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go.” Some of my fondest family memories are of my summer days at my grandparent’s log home in Lake Tomahawk on the Wisconsin River. My father and grandfather helped build the log home in the late 1930’s. Some of the logs were cut from the wooded property surrounding the cabin site. The river rocks, from the Wisconsin River that ran in front of the property, were used to build the fireplace and chimney. The cabin had a river rock fireplace in the living room, a wood burning stove in the dining room and a potbelly stove in the kitchen, where my grandmother prepared our meals. My grandmother used pieces of firewood to get the oven to just the right temperature to bake our family favorite coffee cake. As children, my four siblings and I would spend our summer days, berry picking, fishing at the fishing hole, taking turns going with our father in the boat on the river, stacking wood and carrying out the laundry on washing day to be hung outside on the clothesline. My grandfather entertained us for hours with his great story telling abilities. Our family would often arrive late at night after a long drive, greeted by the warm glow of the cabin lights in the windows. I wanted to capture in this painting that welcoming warm glow as well as the ethereal nature of our beloved childhood memories.

Chelsea Bradway
$475.00

Dimensions: 30 x 20 x 1
Medium: Photograph on fine art paper
Year created: 2021
What inspired you to make this work?: This photograph was created out of my love of fantasy and childhood books. As a child who was raised for most of my life without a television, I relied on books to be my escape. Reading was an incredible way to set my imagination free, to explore what was not real. Don’t get me wrong, I had a pretty wonderful childhood growing up in the hills of the Berkshires, but books such as Alice in Wonderland helped me grow into the creative person I am today. After reading a chapter, I would go outside and recreate a scene as I had imagined it with my dolls and the nature that surrounded me. I would be immersed in the dreamscape for hours only to come home to grab a PBJ and run back outside, the screen door banging behind me. From these childhood memories, I decided to start recreating my favorite books into photographic stories. Alice in Wonderland is just the beginning.

After a time wrestling with the medium, and finding new materials to work with, I completed the painting with a better understanding of light, water and the way oil paint moves on a canvas. It brings me back to the many shores I've shared with friends, leaving a smile on my face when I look at it.
